Pella

City : Pella

Description : 96km northwest of Amman lies Pella. It is beautifully spread across the hills that arise from the Jordan valley and is known for its archaeological sights that have manged to gain archaeologists a large sum of money in the past. One advantage of its location is the hot spring which is located here that never runs dry due to it constantly flowing to a small river nearby. There has been so much uncovered here revealing a rich history mainly due to Australian archaeologist in the last decade or so, however, there is still so much left to find and discover. Aside from what has been excavated from the Greco-Roman period, there are still many artifacts to see for visitors who come here. These include artifacts from a Chalcolithic settlement which dates right back too up to 4000 BC! In addition, there are remains from walled cities going back to the Bronze and Iron ages. The name Pella comes from the division of Alexander’s Empire. This is either in honour of Alexander’s birthplace or as a Hellenization of Pihilum. After Pompei’s conquest in 63 BC its success just grew further and further which meant that it became one of the cities of the Roman Decapolis and it more or less took out the Hellenistic city. The Byzantine era was very good for Pella as trade routes to many other countries strengthened and industries developed further and further.
