Umm Al Rasas

City : Umm Al Rasas

Description : Umm Al Rasa is a beautiful archaeologists haven and was announced to b a world heritage site back in 2004. The site consists of structures that date right back between the 3rd and 9th century. Although not all of them have been excavated there is still some beautiful architecture and structures to admire. It is known for its magnificent Byzantine mosaics which are displayed in two churches which too also date back to ancient times. As far as mankind is concerned it is known to have been inhabited since the Iron age which has been discovered thanks to artefacts including basalt pillar bases that have helped determine this. A long time ago it has a completely different name of Kastron Mefaa which the prophet Jeremiah mentioned. The excavations started back in 1986 and have been carried on ever since, however, there is still much of the sight buried under rubble so many more hidden secrets and stories are still to be discovered. So, you might be wondering what actually is there to see in the area. The ruins are enclosed inside a wall with gates facing north, south and east with more structures spreading beyond this wall. Some of the things that archaeologists have been focused on and are worth a visit are the Byzantine churches, oil presses and winery which all offer a unique part of the history of the area and are fascinating to see. You will also be able to see ancient mosaics within the churches especially the Church of the rivers and the Church of the Palm Tree. The Church of St. Stephen also has a beautiful mosaic running along the floor.
